We are well into the holiday season. One thing that most of us do during this time is indulge in sweets and rich foods. While these delicacies are great for our taste buds, they may not have the best effect on our overall oral health. Here are some holiday dental tips to consider as you eat some of your favorite festive foods this season.
- Brush and Floss Often: During the holiday season, most people nibble on food whether they’re at a company party or at a family get together. Constant nibbling will increase the likelihood of buildup of cavity agents. Make sure that you brush and floss your teeth as often as possible so that the heavy foods and sweets don’t sit on the surface of your teeth all day.
- Rinse your mouth out after eating popular holiday foods that stain, such as cranberry sauce, and sticky foods such as pecan pie. If your teeth are not brushed soon after consumption, both of these foods can leave residue on your teeth that can either stain your enamel and/or aid in the development of cavities.
- Eat your potatoes. Sweet potatoes and potatoes do not stick on your teeth like other starchy foods that most people consume during the holiday season.
If you keep these tips in mind as you indulge in your holiday festivities, you should also be able to maintain your dazzling smile.
